A personal computer is composed many physical components of hardware. On this hardware an operating system can be installed upon which a multitude of software applications run to perform the operator’s desired duties.
In computer hardware review we look at various computer hardware components. Though a Personal Computer comes in many forms, a typical one consists of a case in a tower shape i.e. desktop that contains components like a motherboard.
A Motherboard is the main component in this computer hardware review article. It is a large rectangular board having integrated circuitry which connects the rest of the parts of the computer such as the Central processing unit, the Random Access Memory, the disk drives e.g. the compact disk, digital versatile disk, hard disk, or any others, and any peripherals that connect via the ports and the expansion slots.
The following components are directly attached to the motherboard:
The central processing unit is a computer hardware that performs most of the calculations that enable a computer to carry out its functions, and is at other times called the “heartbeat” of the computer. It is usually cooled by a fan and heat sink.
The chip set does mediate communication between the Central Processing Unit and the other system components such as the main memory.
Random Access Memory does store all applications and the current running Operating system.
The Basic Input Output System includes boot firmware and power management. The BIOS tasks are handled by the operating system drivers.
The Internal Buses do connect the CPU to internal components as well as to expansion cards for graphics as well as sound.
The north bridge memory controller, for PCI Express and RAM.
PCI Express, for expansion cards like graphics and physics processors, as well as high-end network interfaces.
PCI, for other expansion cards
ATA that is superseded by SATA
AGP that is superseded by PCI Express.
External Bus Controllers do support ports for the external peripherals. These ports can be controlled directly by the south bridge I/O controller or they can be based on expansion cards attached to the motherboard via the PCI bus.
In computer hardware review we also mention other components like the Power supply unit. Inside a clone computer there is a power supply, at the bottom it has its own fan for cooling. A power supply unit does convert alternating current electric power to direct current power for the computer’s internal components.
Computer storage is also not left out in computer hardware review and it consists of the following components;
Compact Disc – this is a very common type of removable media, it is both suitable for music and data.
CD-ROM Drive – it is a device that is used for reading data from a Compact disk.
CD Writer –it is a device used for reading as well as writing data to and from a Compact disk.
Others include the following; USB flash drive and tape drive..
A computer has secondary storage which includes the hard disk, solid-state drive and a RAID array controller. There are also other computer hardware components that include the following; Sound card, Input and output peripherals like the mouse, gaming devices, keyboard, scanner, microphone, printers, speakers, headphones and monitor.
